Raising carbon finance for a large scale sustainable rice cultivation in North India
Nurture.farm is an Indian subsidiary of a $4Bn+ agri input corporate United Phosphorus Limited, undertaking large scale sustainable rice cultivation across different parts of India. The firm deploys AWD (Alternate Wet and Dry) and DSR (Direct Seeded Rice) to enable lowering of methane emissions, a potent GHG, in the rice ecosystem.

Our engagement with Nurture.farm included an exclusive mandate to source a buyer for carbon assets developed in the process. The company had previously applied to Verra under its corresponding methodology AMS-III.AU, to register its carbon assets and was looking to source a credible buyer for 50k+ annual credits generated by the project.

Calculus Carbon was successful in receiving a commitment for offtake of Nurture.farm’s credits from a financial institution operating as a JV between an European automotive giant and another European climate advisory. However the transaction was interrupted by Verra putting the AMS-III.AU under review for large scale implementation of AWD-DSR, which was later morphed into VM0042.
